open ] [ memorial day and grant park
It looks like rain in Chicago, but at least it's cooler than it was yesterday. Caroline has done a wonderful job organizing this event. She's taken her newfound occupation very seriously and the VIP tent for all of the sponsors of today's event is looking exceptional. Grant Park is bustling with activity -- from the 5K run, to the Memorial Day Parade that has circled the property, all the way to the outdoor concert that is filling the air with live music. It does take a lot of effort to organize something like this and while Caroline didn't help the city of Chicago with any of that set-up, she certainly made sure that anyone that helped pay for the events is being taken care of.
For the most part, Grant Park is the place to be. The live band is about to start and everyone is welcome to enjoy the festivities. The day is important and considering Caroline is from a very history influenced town, rife with Civil War history -- Memorial Day is one of the key times of year that she's used to having something to do. It was even her idea to have a secondary tent at the event, just for anyone that wanted to take a bit of time to relax out of the heat -- naturally, if she had realized it was going to rain, she would've planned for that.
Instead, she's just enjoying the music, the great food, and the city of Chicago. It's a great place to be -- even if you were kidnapped here by a crazy rift in time.
((ooc: This is a PARTY post. Memorial Day in Grant Park with plenty of things for y'all to participate in. Come see Caroline, set-up your own area, just think of it as a giant festival with food, music, and a 5K run... trust me, these things happen in Chicago all the time.))

Ninety-five percent of the time, he thinks his Rift power is the best thing to have ever happened to him. He's always loved food, but understanding it now has saved him not only a lot of money, but also made him feel a little more self-sufficient.
Unfortunately, right now falls into the five percent. There are so many smells coming from the food area that his brain can't distinguish one from the other, and at the moment, it's giving him a bit of a headache. But he's found that the easiest way to solve that problem is to eat.
He just needs to figure out where to start.
no subject
He indulges this appetite, the food kind, so he doesn't indulge it in other areas.
Or at least, so that he can try better.

She's really glad that she's starting to revel in the fact that she does still maintain some of her humanity and even if she knows it might put her at a disadvantage, she's going to enjoy whatever she can. When it comes to food, she'll enjoy as much of it as she can.

Add that to the fact that Caroline did very well with planning this event, Sara feels comfortable enough with leaving it in her hands while she takes on the 5K run.
(Not that the run is that long, but still -- it says something about Sara.)
She's over in the starting area, stretching and limbering up as she gets ready for the run to start. Feel free to bug her either then, or afterwards when she's grabbing a bite to eat.
no subject
She spots someone ahead, stretching out and she moves toward her, knowing that Maura would be by soon enough.
"Running alone or with a partner?"

He goes near the starting area but not in the starting area.
"Hey, wooh! You've got your own... cheerleader here. I'm guessing you're running.... in the... thing."
Words, Mark has them, and he is very good at them. "I didn't know you were a runner!"

Technically, his hot dogs are always free, so this isn't really work, work, but he's out there with Irma, giving away hot dogs and slushies so that people don't melt in the heat. With each hot dog goes a business card for his and Tonk's PI agency, so really -- in the end it is a little bit of working.
Otherwise, he's just around, being Shawn and occasionally giving not-so-legitimate palm readings. The psychic schtick, it never dies. Although, he's not really reading palms. He's reading hair.
Really, you might be better off not asking.
no subject
Juliet hears Shawn's voice before she actually sees him, typically animated in both tone and expression. Hanging back so as not to interrupt, her head tilts in puzzlement as she watches Shawn perform what appears to be (at least she hopes that's what it is) a psychic reading on someone's... hair?
Now, one might ask why is she even a little bit surprised by this. Obviously she has made the mistake of underestimating Shawn's immense talent for taking ridiculous to whole new levels. She shakes her head and rolls her eyes at his antics, but a small smile tugs at her lips regardless. After he successfully concludes another 'reading', Juliet approaches.
"I did not know hair was a reliable psychic conduit," she remarks, mock-seriously. "You learn something new every day, I guess."

At the same time, when in Rome. (Just not literally this time.)
As far as she is concerned, Memorial Day is a fairly low maintenance holiday. A lot of barbeques and parades, which in her mind means it's the perfect time for a picnic. She's got her blanket spread out under a tree in the park, with her own basket of treats as well as plenty of room for
Dean Winchesterher new canine friend to run around without going too far.(She's about eighty-five percent certain that he's a shapeshifter. She's aware that it's a viable risk in Chicago. But until the moment where he turns back, there's no reason she can't take care of him. Or buy him adorable tiny flag t-shirts for the occasion.)
Sophie herself is dressed in a sundress, with a fairly large hat, despite her being in the shade, and is the perfect picture of an American out on Memorial Day. Or at least she thinks she is. You're more than welcome to tell her otherwise.
no subject
Minnie is Sarah's puppy. Sarah didn't buy it or anything. The Rift decided that teleporting, immortal kittens weren't the only thing it could send to the Tower. Several teleporting, immortal dogs ultimately ended up there, as well. For an angel of death, an immortal pet is probably fitting.
In any case, she had no heart to give it away and even the one time she tried, the puppy just kept coming back, as if glued to her side.
She's tiny, the schnoodle, thus the name. She's also flirtatious as hell, which is why Minnie and the chihuahua are now running to meet each other.
"Sorry," she says to Sophie with a small, breathless smile once she's caught up with the terrible thing. "She's... very eager."

She'll likely set up a picnic-like area for herself and whoever she
draggedconvinced winningly to come with her.She is also, at the moment, accompanied by a giant dog. It's not her dog, for the record, she's only keeping an eye out for it for his owner, a.k.a. her brother Jeremy. It's a big, lovable dog but also trouble, and she knows this firsthand. Elena holds him by the leash but really, it looks like the dog is walking Elena all around Grant Park instead of the other way around.
"Slow down," Elena says to the dog, to no avail. Apologies if said dog sidles up to anyone.
He's friendly, though!
no subject
Which catches the attention of Jeremy's dog.
For the record, Buffy likes dogs. She thinks they're big, furry piles of fun. But there's one thing that dogs don't get to do, and that's eat her food.
"Uh-uh," she says as he bounds over, holding her hot dog up over her head. It might not do her very much good, but at least she's making an effort. "That's not for you."

Connor's lived in Chicago for years now, so he's used to festivities such as this one, but it never fails to impress him how well people set it up.
He's big on food, so he's there for a while as he decides what he wants to have first. It's harder to decide than it looks, if only because he's pretty sure he wants everything. His werewolf appetite would make it possible for him to eat it all, but he doesn't want to leave people without food, so you know.
He'll stick with only several things.
Connor wants to be close by when the live band starts to play, so he's making his way over there.
Apologies if he bumps into you on his way.

The last time she figuratively ran into him, it wasn't such a good day. Nothing is as horrible to her as hurting someone, and on top of that, that she's become this monstrous thing. Still, she's glad he was the one to find her that morning. If she took the time to look back on it, she wouldn't have it any other way.
Today, though, she's running into him in the preferred way. Literally.
When it happens, she almost apologizes, but then she sees the face attached to the body. The very nice body that she can't help but give the once over, even after all the work she's put into controlling her urges.
"I'd say we have to stop meeting like this, but I wouldn't mean it."

Well, she tries -- she keeps getting distracted by the general enthusiasm and good cheer she can practically sense saturating the atmosphere. Little does Juliet know that's exactly what she's doing, her yet-undiscovered rift power making her feel some of the emotions of those around her. At least she's mostly in an upbeat mood today!
Bump into her anywhere, she's making her way around. And you bet if there are any of those typical festival game booths about, Juliet will find them.
no subject
He's making his way through the rest of the crowd, looking over some of the booths until he hits a flavor in his food that brings him to a dead stop. That's the other unfortunate thing about his Rift power. Eureka moments can hit you at any given time -- even inopportune ones.
"So that what that is." A mystery of his food life is finally solved. He gives a pleased nod before continuing walking again. "That's good to know."
Unfortunately for him, he's not really looking where he's going.

But that doesn't stop the urge and it's hard to get that itch out of her head.
Still, the festivities are helping. She's still in her home-made Batman outfit and people can find her currently hanging upside down from a tree. Her legs wrapped firmly around the low-lying trunk, the black sheet she uses as a cape trailing on the ground.
She's watches people having fun around her, trying to break through the toffee on the toffee apple she's bought for herself.
Even Batman needs her sugar fix.
no subject
He's reading poetry.
Or, rather, he's trying to read poetry through all the bits of toffee that keep somehow falling on him and the pages. It probably says a lot that none of this seems to bother him, and the only indication he shows of even acknowledging the toffee is when he brushes it away.
How the toffee is getting on him at all is a mystery, given Dylan's position off to his side.
Except it isn't, really.
It's possible that he's trying not to smirk.

Yes, meditation. It helps her control certain urges that have become a problem since becoming a werewolf. Mostly the lash-out-in-anger and tackle-that-hot-guy urges. She's just happy to have found something that helps.
Today is a little different, though. Today it's the hunger that's getting to her. Usually she's good with it, or good enough, but today there are just so many smells everywhere, and oh my god she wants to eat everything.
If you see her, she's probably eating something. She's trying to control herself. Honest.
no subject
She's left the dog she was trying to walk in much better hands, and once she catches sight of Bonnie she makes a bee line for her.
"Bonnie, hey," Elena says by way of greeting, waving at her as she makes her way past the crowd.
Elena hasn't tried much of the food, so Bonnie will have to tell her what tastes the best.

Theta is not all right.
He's not sleeping much, his hands shake with what he sees in his dreams. He doesn't feel safe anywhere, the world is broken and there's nothing he can do about it. He doesn't feel safe alone but the world makes him scared of people. He doesn't know what to do, how to exist anymore. All the old tips and tricks are going out of his head and all there is is darkdarkdark.
but there are people having fun here, enjoying himself and he remembers liking that, liking people and how they smile and move when they enjoy themselves. He tries to imitate them, following people at random for a few minutes, picking up on their movements but it doesn't last for long. It dissolves into his odd, awkward motions and sooner rather than later, he finds himself crumpling against a tree, curling up and watching the celebrations, too scared to close his eyes, despite his exhaustion and too nervous at failing to look like a normal person to do anything else.
no subject
It's not easy being in Chicago. Some people can handle it better than others, but apparently not everyone makes it out the other side.
She makes her way closer, water bottle clutched tightly in her hand and drops into a crouch next to him.

It's a party and where parties and celebrations are, Cassie can usually be found. That's his logic really, he's here for her, to celebrate with her to maybe catch her and be with her and....
Okay, he should really admit that he's in love with her, he's just taking steps towards that. Slow steps.
So there he is, settled near an ice cream vendor with something violently blue in a cone resting in one hand. It's quite tasty in his opinion but others may disagree. he's not looking to socialize exactly but he'll talk if anyone approaches. All thoughts aside, he's out to say he was away from his room for the day, even though, now that he has Georgia to work for, he has a reason to stay cooped up.
He still feels like he should make the effort.

She knows Spencer’s around. She has a feeling he’d be here if she was. She’s proud that he’s coming outside more. She would tell him to do it for himself and not just for her, but that’s no easy task to get him to realise that.
She’s missed him whilst she’s been away, finding Spencer was one of the first things she did when she returned to Kashtta. Being forced into an arranged marriage made her realise how much she does love him. She’s had no doubt about those feeling for him, but absence does really make the heart grow fonder.
Finishing her rounds of seeing friends, she’s wandering around aimlessly, guitar still strapped to her back, and simply enjoying the atmosphere when she spots him. Grinning, she heads over, placing her hand on his arm to get his attention.
“Hey, you,” she says brightly, greeting him with a kiss, and then laughing at the shockingly coloured ice cream, “That’s some ice cream you got there,”

Kali knows that Memorial Day doesn't apply to her, she's more of a Veteran's Day girl, but she knows people that have died in the line of fire so the holiday is one she appreciates.
Unlike Easter, she doesn't understand the bunny.
She'd grabbed some food and migrated to a clump of trees where she's now sitting, cross-legged in the grass, observing.
no subject
Which is why she's somehow ended up invisible and sitting next to Kali, knees pressed up against her chest, 'observing' if 'observing' here means 'casually picking nibblits of food off of Kali's plate while still invisible'.
Not that it lasts long. Scout goes visible fairly quickly, her arm in mid-reach over to the plate. It doesn't matter much either way, as Kali probably could feel her as soon as she sat down, what with demon temperature being as high as it is. Regardless, Scout's going to keep picking off her plate until told otherwise.

But it's not worrying him enough to keep him away from the festivities today. Like most high school seniors, Leon doesn't care all that much about the reason for the holiday--sure, he's thankful to those who have served, but mostly today he's grateful for the day off of school.
He has a giant plate of food (because free food is something he definitely should take advantage of) and is weaving his way through the park, trying his best to not look suspicious while simultaneously listening to the band that's playing.
no subject
Her leave of the city for the last several weeks has now lead to the school hounding her. She'll probably not graduate, but she doesn't really care as she never wanted to be there in first place anyway.
She doesn't care much for the festivities, the music doesn't sound too bad, but at least being out of the house gives her something to do. There's not much fun drinking on your own. It'll stop her thinking about Peter too.
Sat resting against a tree, blowing smoke rings, she looks up to see Leon walking past. She bites her lip, half-tempted to let him go, but she can't help herself. He may/may not be a reason why she came back to this bloody city again.
"Hey." she calls, a small smile twitching at her lips. "Quit lookin' so fucking shady."
She can't help it. Always with the insults is Scarlett.

Which means he's a bucket of cheers when he takes his food and sits quietly on the grass, staring at his plate, thinking of the names as he eats. His father's name is on that list. So was Sydney's, for a while. He wonders if, back home, back in his time, his name would also be on the list.
He takes a moment to listen to the band, eyes closed, face raised towards the music. He's still approachable, if you want to approach dorky grown men listening to music with their eyes closed.

Right now, he's grabbing himself a drink, and if someone's paying close enough attention, he's also spiking said drink. No one in mystic falls ever really cared about that stuff (or carding or selling liquor to minors...) but he's not sure what the protocol is here.
no subject
So it means she pays attention to people, to younger people especially. However, she's not the ordinary adult that frowns on alcohol use underage (unless driving is involved). She does notice, however. "Is the drink really that bad on its own?" There's an eyebrow raise as she looks at him.

So, she's examining one at the moment as she sits on a bench in the shade. One might think she was observing something under a microscope, the way she's analyzing this egg.

He liked Memorial Day for several reasons. The main one being to give thanks to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect the innocent and the country they served, and because of pastime of participating in historical re-enactments of the Civil War. However, Carlton didn't believe it had to just be those in the Military that deserved honor and thanks. Every day cops like him put their lives on the line with one thing on their mind: keeping the general public safe.
Even though Carlton technically didn't have any jurisdiction whatsoever in this place, he couldn't help but stay in cop mode, especially with what O'Hara had mentioned. If those that fell through the rifts - the wanderers - were often met with violence, there was no way in hell he was leaving Kashtta Tower without his sidearm locked and loaded in case of such. If no one would protect them, he would, and even though O'Hara may oppose it given how shaken she was after the Yin case, he'd have her help too.
Being that he can't get himself out of cop mode, Carlton's strolling the grounds doing as much observation as possible. As much as this place seemed friendly, there was clearly a motive if there were wanderers stuck here, that and he wanted to get back to Santa Barbara as soon as he could before chaos erupted back home.
Go ahead and bump into him while he's walking around, although if there is a games booth that involves shooting, he'll be there.

He's wandering through the game booths, looking over the different participants when he catches Lassiter at one of the shooting games. Not that that really puts much stock in how they can handle a weapon, but there's some things you can just tell, especially when you're a cop.
No matter how much they try to suppress them, all cops have their tells.
His badge is on his belt today, and he'll just lean against one of the supports while he watches Lassiter shoot, all the while trying not to get powdered sugar on himself. It's a feat, this is true, but he's actually pretty well practiced at it.
Once Lassiter finishes the round of the game, he'll speak up. "That's not bad."

She's standing by herself now, leaning against a railing, and just watching the crowds. Dressed in her usual blacks and pale greys, her expression a little sad, she's not exactly looking her most festive, but... it actually is nice, seeing everyone here enjoying themselves and the afternoon. She needs that reminder too, that this sort of thing still exists in this city.
liv might be getting two, just because i can
Okay, it's probably a lie because nothing will ever trump his mother's home cooking in his eyes, but it's still pretty damn good sauerkraut. He's got that, pierogies and kielbasa on a plate when he spots Olivia and wanders over.
"If you haven't hit the Polish booth already, I would definitely recommend it." Along with everywhere else. There is very little he hasn't tried today.
He might hate himself for it later.
I totally approve of this.

So there's a cranky reporter in sunglasses weaving her way through the crowd with a video camera in hand. Get too close and you just might get kicked in the shins. She's starting to get a migraine and is not inclined to be nice to those who annoy her.
this is probably the worst choice
He's leaning in the wiener mobile, watching the people mill from place to place, when he spots Georgia with the camera and the sour expression on her face. Most people would probably see that as a cue to avoid her, but Shawn Spencer is not most people.
Unfortunately.
"You look like you could use a slushie."

Quentin does not exactly want to be here—large social gatherings of this sort are not his thing, and where the hell is all the champagne? this is a celebration, isn't it?—but he is, nevertheless, here at the urging of some friends.
Said friends have, unsurprisingly, disappeared into the throng.
So he's currently picking around one of the food tables, making subtle faces at the various and sundry items offered. Tiny hot dogs, deviled eggs, meat impaled on sticks...
He settles for the cheese. The cheese seems safe.
And then he turns to observe the crowd, brows slightly furrowed over his glasses.
It isn't long before people start throwing glances his way, at which point he locates a chair and sits. People can't marvel at his height if he's sitting down. (But he can still make faces at the people, now more discreetly. So ha.)

She's trying to make her way to the tiny hot dogs, they're almost as cute as the tiny cupcakes, but when she gets there, alas! They're all gone. The look on her face is the epitome of defeated and she let's herself slump into a free chair.
She glances at the man next to her. He's very tall, but she assumes he already knows that. "You know, cheese causes constipation if consumed to frequently."
